19 May 2017OFSTEDHarris Primary Academy Shortlands ‘Outstanding’ in First Ever Ofsted Report   Our academy has been rated ‘outstanding’ in every category following its first ever Ofsted inspection.   The Ofsted report praised the positive attitudes of the pupils and the strong support of the school leaders and staff. Inspectors said:   “Pupils’ attitudes to learning are exemplary. They are keen to answer challenging questions which teachers probe. They do not give up when work is made harder by their teachers.” “Leaders have high expectations for the progress pupils should make across a wide range of subjects. They are relentless in pursuit of accelerated progress.” “Teachers enable pupils to understand and respect one another’s views and opinions. This enables even the youngest children to consider and discuss sensitive issues.” “Pupils behave with respect for one another and adults, fully living up to the values which the school promotes.” “Pupils told inspectors that they appreciate the individual support which teachers offer them to develop their own writing.” “Pupils in each year group make rapid progress, living up to leaders’ high expectations. As a result, the proportion of pupils on track to meet and exceed expected standards of attainment by the end of key stage 1 is higher than the 2016 national average in reading, writing and mathematics.”   Sam French, Executive Principal of the academy, said:   “We are delighted that Ofsted recognise the positivity and hard work that characterises our school. This ‘outstanding’ rating is a credit to our children and staff and I am incredibly proud we have achieved this in our first ever Ofsted inspection, in just three years since opening the school. I would like to thank and congratulate our wonderful pupils, parents and staff who make Harris Primary Academy Shortlands such a special place to learn.”   OFSTED-report.pdf
7 July 2014Harris Federation becomes a London Maths Hub The Harris Federation has been announced by the Government as part of a new national network of ‘Maths Hubs’ which will create a new model for teaching maths. There are 32 Maths Hubs in total and the scheme is being backed with funding from the Department for Education in order to help children and teenagers in UK schools match the standards of maths achieved in top-performing East Asian countries.   We have begun working with schools across London with a clear and common purpose of developing a world class maths education.  This includes collaboration with new teachers, established teachers and subject leaders, as well as anyone wanting to focus on research and development and new forms of pupil enrichment in maths. Jacquelyn Lomas, Harris Federation Consultant Leader for Mathematics, said: “This project is close to our hearts because our experience is that effective collaboration is key to supporting improvements in education." “Being a Maths Hub means we can establish a London-wide network for sharing strong teaching and learning practices, supporting better training for teachers in both pedagogy and subject knowledge in these times of rapid, but exciting curriculum reform." “We are keen to welcome more teachers from different schools, phases, universities and maths associations to take part in the continuing development and design of the curriculum, assessment, and training program.  Working collaboratively, we will develop resources that will be made available on our Teaching School website as we invite more schools to take part in this exciting opportunity. We will continue to post information about the developments of this programme and our other ongoing projects to allow more schools a chance to engage."
